Tasting Notes
Intense deep red colour, rich plum and blackberry with a touch of aniseed on the nose. The palate is lush with mouth filling plum. Elegant tannin structure, finishing with sweet fruit and a hint of spice.
Vintage Overview
The 2009 vintage began with the driest end to winter and spring that Sanguine Estate has experienced so far. This low rainfall resulted in a dry soil profile and the vines responded to this by producing a small canopy and a reduced yield. A great spell of rain in December followed by a dry and hot January and February set the small crop up for an early harvest. Perfect conditions continued throughout harvest, cool but dry, leaving us with fantastic quality and an easy vintage in the winery.
Winemaking
We utilize traditional winemaking practices such as small fermentation tanks, natural fermentation (i.e. no yeast additions) and gravity feeding. Whilst this can be quite labour intensive, we believe it ensures the preservation of natural fruit flavours and the Heathcote terrior character. This wine is a combination of Shiraz and Viognier (approx. 3%) that are hand picked at the same time and co-fermented to ensure good integration. As with all varieties produced at Sanguine Estate, the grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then naturally fermented with wild indigenous yeasts in small open fermenters. The wine is then transferred via gravity (to avoid pump shock) to predominantly French oak barriques (approximately 10% new) and left to mature for approximately 14 months.
